William DeLacey was a colonel and highly decorated
commander of the 839th Air Division at Sewart Air Base. The 839th
Air Division was an airlift division that provided
command and staff supervision for assigned units. A Veteran of WW2
he served at one point as the commander of the Tempelhof Air force
Base in Berlin Germany. During his career he served as Commander at
different times for the 314 Operations Group (AETC), the
314th Troop Carrier Group and the 316th Troop Carrier Group.
Ellie Lee is one of the grand daughters of land developer Frank Johns, Her mom is Jamie Lynn Johns-Lee.
Mary Frances King is the wife of Andrew Frank Johns. During her life she had 6 children, Andrew Franks, Ernest King, William B., John Matthews, Thomas Nelson, Martha Susan and Mary Lou.
In 1915 during a revival given by Brother Doss she was baptized in the stone river. On May 27 1931 she married Andrew Frank Johns in a ceremony officiated by J. B. Estes in the Smyrna Methodist Church.
Gilbert Olerud is not native to Smyrna, or even Tennessee. He was born and raised in Fargo North Dakota and came to our town as an Airman. He arrived in Smyrna in 1952. When discharged Gilbert Lerud decided to make Smyrna his home and started to invest in the community.
In 1953 he purchased the trailer park and local
grocery from
Vincent Gambill. In the following years with family support he
invested time and money into a successful business and became an
important part of the local business community.
In 1965 Secretary of Defense announced the closing of Sewart Air
force Base. In 1970 the closing caused a mass loss of resident but
Gilbert moved ahead and in 1973 opened the Gilsville Family Center.
Gilbert Olerud passed away in 1980. The stores and property he built are still owned and run by his children.
